Single crystal Characterization Physical properties dHvA effect Pressure

Pressure experiments

Pressure makes the size of crystal, lattice parameter, small, leading to change of original physical properties of the crystal. The picture shows that the cup noodles shrinks as you put on it deep see, which is the one of exhibits in National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation. If you dive at depth of 10 m, the pressure increases by 1 atm (~0.1MPa). The righmost is put on the depth of 6,000 m, the pressure of 600 atm (60MPa) is applied. In the sea, since the pressure is isotropically applied, it shrinks with the same shape, as shown in the photo. We use various medium to perform the isotropic pressure.

Piston cylinder cell
Pressure is applied up to 3 GPa by pressing a piston and squashing a tefron cell. A large Sample space enable us to perform the dHvA experiment and AC specific heat measurement under pressure.

Brigdman anvil cell
Brigdman anvil cell consists of two opposed anvils face. A ring gascket is squashed to apply pressure up to about 5 GPa.

combined extreme environments (1.3K/60T/4GPa)
Pressure cell, anvil, and gascket are usually made of metallic materials. This causes heating effect under pulsed high magnetic fied, leading to the difficulty in experiment under combined extreme environment of high-pressure, low-temperature, and high-field. To resolve the problem, we take non-metallic material, zirconia anvil and pyrophyllite gascket. We succeeded reducing the heating effect durig measuring time of ~ 0.1 sec.
